Word of the Month: Fabric

Shana Goodwin, November 1, 2022

Fabric

Noun

  1. A cloth produced especially by knitting, weaving, or felting fibers. Example: I bought some brightly patterned fabric at the outdoor market.
  2. A complex underlying structure. Example: Inflation can ruin an economy and undermine the whole fabric of society.

Synonyms: cloth, material, textile

Verb: Fabricate

To make; create. Example: The company fabricates metal machine parts.

Be careful: the word fabric has a false cognate in Spanish: “fábrica,” which means “factory.” However, we do use the verb “fabricate” to mean “to make or build,” which is much closer in meaning to the Spanish word “fábrica.”
