Word of the month: Cloudburst

Janean Fischli, April 1, 2025

A cloud burst is a sudden, heavy rainfall that usually occurs very locally and in a short period of time.

The word ‘burst’ in English means to break, suddenly. We often use it to describe when a balloon loses all its air at once. A cloudburst is when one of the cumulonimbus clouds, built up from the humidity of the day, abruptly rains down all its water. Have you been caught in a cloudburst recently?

Examples:

After weeks without rain, the cloudburst caused the withering plants to revive.

The crowd was drenched when a cloudburst dumped rain on the stadium.

The forecast predicts humid weather with occasional cloudbursts.
