With young learners, riddles are a fun way to practice comparatives and superlatives, as well as English vocabulary. The theme of the riddles can be adapted to any vocabulary topic and students love the challenge of figuring out clues, while at the same time showing off their knowledge. Here are some riddles from a unit on animals:

I am taller than a person.
I am the heaviest mammal that lives on land.
I have the best sense of smell and the longest nose.
What am I?

I am smaller than a lion.
My tail is longer than a dog’s tail.
I am the fastest animal in the world.
What am I?

Answers: elephant, cheetah
