Capaz de ser pero aún no existente. Ejemplo: The cosmetics company gave out free sample products hoping to attract potential customers. (La compañía de cosméticos entregó productos de muestra gratis con la esperanza de atraer clientes potenciales.)

Sustantivo

  1. La habilidad o capacidad inherente para el crecimiento, desarrollo o éxito futuro. Ejemplo: Although she is still relatively unknown, the young singer has a lot of potential. (Aunque todavía es relativamente desconocida, la joven cantante tiene mucho potencial.)
  2. La posibilidad de que algo suceda o resulte de unas condiciones dadas. Ejemplo: The dry weather increases the potential of wildfires in the Chaco. (El clima seco aumenta el potencial de incendios forestales en el Chaco.)

Como profesora de inglés, me inspira todos los días el “potential” de mis alumnos: todos tienen sueños y metas por los que están trabajando duro para cumplir, ¡y sé que llegarán lejos!

Nota: La palabra en inglés potential tiene un “amigo falso” en español: “potente”, cuyo significado tiene más que ver con poder que con posibilidad. Mis estudiantes a menudo usan incorrectamente la palabra en inglés potential, cuando quieren decir que algo es poderoso (potent, powerful). Las palabras provienen de la misma raíz latina, pero los significados son ligeramente diferentes en inglés y español.
